Overview
Muztagh Tower is located in the Baltoro Muztagh subrange of the Karakoram Mountain range. It stands on the border of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan and Xinjiang Uyghur in China. It is the 90th highest mountain in the world with a height of 7,273 meters above sea level. In 1909, a photo captured by Vittorio Sella showed the peak from a perspective that made it look like a giant, pointed tooth and impossible to summit. This image, titled “Muztagh Tower Sella 1909”, was the reason Muztagh Tower became famous among high-altitude Climbers. Later in the 1940s many unsuccessful expeditions of the Muztagh tower were attempted and revealed less daunting routes, paving the way for a successful summit in 1956 by a British-American team which was led by Nicholas Clinch. The most renowned route on Muztagh Tower is the Northwest Ridge. Other routes exist on the mountain’s faces, but they are more technical and dangerous. Muztagh Tower presents significant challenges to climbers. The unforgiving rough terrain features steep slopes and the constant threat of avalanches. Combine this with unpredictable weather conditions and the remoteness of the peak, and Muztagh Tower becomes a climb only for the most skilled and experienced mountaineers.
